Quinta da Comporta
A property built around a terracotta courtyard where the old grain stores once stood, set among the rice fields of Carvalhal in Comporta. Designed by Miguel Câncio Martins, opened in 2019, and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
Why we chose it
Comporta is an hour south of Lisbon and almost nobody outside Portugal knew about it until recently. Rice fields, pine forest, and forty kilometres of Atlantic beach with nothing built on it. The property sits in the middle of that landscape rather than looking at it from a distance.
The architecture
Câncio Martins took the traditional Comporta fishermen's houses as the starting point - timber, whitewash, thatch, and built something contemporary out of them. Honey wood, wicker, sisal, and interiors that stay deliberately quiet. Sixty-one rooms, suites, and pool villas, none of them loud.
The rice fields
The outdoor pool looks straight out over them. So does the restaurant terrace. The fields change colour through the season and there is very little else in the view. Teams tend to spend more time outdoors here than at any other property in the portfolio.
The pace
Oryza Spa with a hammam and indoor pool, a cinema lounge, and Carvalhal beach fifteen minutes away by bicycle. Chef João Sousa cooks from the organic garden and the surrounding region. We run sessions in the morning and leave the afternoons open, which is when most of the thinking actually settles.
